June 2010: saving the lives of children from 40 countries!

Save a Child’s Heart has brought a child from El Salvador to the Wolfson Medical Center in Israel for life saving heart surgery, making El Salvador the 40th country the project has brought children from. 2 year old Sara Magdalena Reyes arrived in Israel on Thursday, June 17th and underwent open heart surgery at the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon on July 4th.

Sara lives in Ahuachapan, a remote area of El Salvador which does not have access to clean water, electricity or adequate health care services. Sara, the youngest child, lives with her mother, a housewife, and her father, a farm worker, and her three siblings, in a one-room tin and clay house, which is located three hours from the closest hospital.

She has been brought to Israel as part of a “Gift of Life” initiative – “Our hearts are in El Salvador” – in which 40 Salvadorian children will be sent to 28 Gift of Life affiliated hospitals around the world. Click here for a list of sponsors of the initiative.

When Sara and her mother arrived to the SACH children’s home, they were paid a visit by the El Salvadorian Ambassador to Israel, Her Excellency Ms Suzana Gun de Hasenson, who brought presents and a warm smile.

Sara’s mother, a charming woman, has made friends with two of the other mothers in the house, one of whom speaks a bit of Spanish and the other from Ethiopia. Lilliana, a six year old sweet girl from Angola, has “adopted” Sara as her own little friend from the minute Sara arrived to the children’s home.
